VW DustOff #1

VW DustOff #1

For as many years as we can remember, this small field in Campbelltown, PA was host to the Volksfest event. Last year, however, Volksfest moved its event to the Mount Hope Winery and Estate – leaving the venue open for Dust Off to move in and give the younger VW community a breath of fresh air – errr water?!

As the day started, it looked like Dust Off was going to be more like Dry Off as it was an ugly rainy day. But not long into the morning, the clouds broke free and it turned into quite a nice sunny, enjoyable day. For our crew, the first event of spring is about more than just cars. We make clothing and stickers that people seem to really like. So it’s a chance for us to get back in touch face-to-face with our customers, fans, friends, and community. Sticking with that same way of thinking, our coverage from this year’s events will likely feature more than just cars. Its about enjoying our culture and sharing it with our friends.

There’s been a growing trend at VW shows recently. The “stance” community has jumped on board – and it makes perfect sense because the VW community has been “stancing” their cars for years before it became a trending topic. Some of the more close minded VW owners seem to take offense to the inclusion of proper fitted Hondas, Subarus, BMWs, etc into their scene. But we think its a perfect fit and we love it.

Dust Off #1 was a great way to kick off the spring.

We’ll be at many more events as the spring and summer moves on, but we’ll be also anticipating Dust Off #2 next spring.

Here’s some more photos from the event.

Detroit’s Ride it Sculpture Park

Detroit’s Ride it Sculpture Park

In a unique and diverse Detroit neighborhood a transition is taking place. People are moving out, but people are also starting to move back. There is a devotion to this neighborhood, a uniquness and a challange to create a place that is rich in diversity, exciting and fun live in, beautiful and clean to play in. This is where Ride-it Sculpture Park takes it’s inspiration and come this summer, with your help, will become the first sculpture park for skateboarders. A place where bored neighborhood teenagers and adults can meet, play, create, build and ride on.

Ride it Sculpture Park consists of four vacant commercial lots along East Davison Freeway in Detroit and an adjacent vacant house as the main site for the project. The house will serve as a mini indoor park, transforming parts of the house to be skateable and livable at the same time for visiting skateboarders and artists. The park will extend into the neighborhood revamping neglected alleys, garages and other vacant lots, creating a new and positive use for the forgotten and dismissed landscapes of this great city.

With the closing of most recreational facilities and lack of art venues in the city, Detroit is in dire need for new models for community building, infrastructure care and neighborhood life that is dependent on DYI projects as apposed to business as usual. Designing and building of Ride It Sculpture Park will be done with the help and input of the local teens, making them stakeholders/skateboarders in the growth and success of their neighborhood.

Part 2 – Brazil Scene

Part 2 – Brazil Scene

As it turns out, ask and you shall receive! We ran a story the other day featuring some Brazilian drifting action. At the end of the story we said – next time send us photos of those beautiful Brazilian girls. So here you go… our new friend from Brazil sent us along some pictures showing us that cars and girls go hand-in-hand in Latin American automotive culture as well.

He says…
“Events in Brazil are powered by the rhythm of Funk, better known as ‘Pancadão’, with lyrics provocative the girls down to the ground (Low Life Style), are dozens of simultaneous events around the country.”

Low Life Style in Brazilian land,
Robson Barbosa.

Thanks again Robson. We especially love your new definition for Low Life Style.
Drop it low, ladies.

Look forward to more cool Latin American car culture stuff from Robson in the future.

Because we here at LLS/JS grew up on the WU, we were excited to see the possibility of a RZA based cartoon. Check the pilot it speaks for itself.

Tupac @ Coachella

Tupac @ Coachella

For those of you who weren’t there (like us)- and for those who weren’t live streaming the festival all weekend, Coachella got under way this past weekend. As if it wasn’t enough of a thrill to have Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg headlining the first weekend full of performances, they did the impossible. Now Rick Ross ain’t the only person saying Tupac back. Insane hologram technology made it possible for the Coachella crowd to see Tupac perform again. This collaboration and incredible idea came from the mind of Dre himself and was executed by AV Concepts and curator Nick Smith. Smith wouldn’t say how much this specific event cost but said that a comparable project could cost anywhere from $100,000 to $400,000 to produce. Either way we say it was money well spent!

Enjoy:

Brazil Scene

Brazil Scene

We recently received an email from someone in Brazil, wanting to share a bit of the Latin American car culture with us – and of course our readers. So today we’d like to pass along some videos and photos that were shared with us… and let you guys get a glimpse of how car people get down in Brazil! It’s always exciting to see different cultures sharing the love of cars that we have here in our country.

Enjoy!

The photos that were sent over to us show a little bit of the drift scene and some insane audio set-ups. Thanks Robson! We’d love to see more! Next time feel free to include photos of some of those beautiful Brazilian girls as well!

New York International Auto Show

New York International Auto Show

The Jacob Javitz Center has opened its doors for the annual New York International Auto Show. We had the opportunity to head up to Manhattan and attend the show during Media Day this past week. While we’re more into cars that have been modified, NYIAS is always one of the more exciting “auto shows” because all the high end brands have cars on display – and there are always a few cool concept cars.

Just as Americans looks to NYC for some of the latest fashion trends, the NYIAS is also a good place to see what’s trending in the automotive manufacturer world. A growing trend – one that we also found on modified cars at SEMA – is matte paint. Both BMW and Mercedes agreed on the formula for success with their M and AMG series vehicles – luxury + performance = matte paint.

One of the most heavily hyped vehicles at the show has been the all-new 2013 SRT Viper.  It’s back and re-designed after a short hiatus – and we think it looks basically the same. The SRT Viper sports a 640hp V-10 under an extremely long hood. Long live Amurrrican Muscle.

In vehicles that people can actually afford news – it was cool to see the production version of Scion’s FR-S on stage in the Scion booth. We made our way to last year’s NYIAS for the main purpose of witnessing the unveiling of this concept. A year later, and it’s almost time for these to start hitting the streets. Now all we have to look forward to is seeing the thousands of FR-S Photoshop renderings that have invaded the internet come to life.

Possibly one of the most visually striking vehicles that debuted on the NYIAS show floor had to be the Fisker Atlantic. The Atlantic concept is a plug-in hybrid luxury sports sedan. It uses a BMW sourced gasoline engine which acts as a generator to keep the batteries charged.

Other things that we thought were cool… a trio of British Racing Green Jaguars:

and Lincoln’s unique display:

Check out the rest of our photos from the event – or head to the big city and see it all for yourself – the show will be open from April 6th thru the 15th. Enjoy!

TAMPA PRO 2012

TAMPA PRO 2012

Congrats go out to Torey Pudwill who won the Tampa Pro last Sunday. Chaz Ortiz took second and Sean Malto got third.

“It feels insane,” Pudwill said about the win. “I couldn’t believe it and it’s such a big honor for me to even be here again. I’ve been coming here since I was 13 and this has been the best year yet.”

The contest started with the 28 qualified skaters from Saturday with the winners of past Tampa Pros going straight to Sunday’s semifinals.

Check out his winning run here….

I still think best flow goes to Chaz Ortiz as he killed this qualifying run!
